Our Work
The founder of Takubo, Sakae Hozumi, started making Shimenawa about 70 years ago. From the beginning we have only worked with local materials supplied by the rice terraces surrounding our community.
Today, the company makes a variety of items, including Shimenawa, green straw crafts, and household items. Much of the production methods remain unchanged from those of previous generations. We harvest rice with traditional methods and all of the products are made by hand.
We believe that we must protect the skills and methods that we have inherited so we can pass them on to the next generation. At the same time, we will work with our colleagues and community to overcome challenges that occur as a result of the changing times we live in.

We also offer in-person and short online video instructions for twisting straw.
